このコウゾ畑は和紙アーティストのリチャード フレイビンさんに提供するコウゾを育てている畑で、10年以上続いています。
この日リチャード フレイビンさんは伝統工芸会館の展示館で畑には来れませんでした。
午後に伝統工芸会館を訪ねて、フレイビンさんの和紙アートと関口さんの陶芸を鑑賞しました。

Clouds In Each Paper

--by Thich Nhat Hanh (Mar 25, 2002)

If you are a poet, you will see clearly that there is a cloudfloating in this sheet of paper. Without a cloud, there will beno rain; without rain, the trees cannot grow: and without trees,we cannot make paper. The cloud is essential for the paper toexist. If the cloud is not here, the sheet of paper cannot be hereeither. So we can say that the cloud and the paper inter-are.

"Interbeing" is a word that is not in the dictionary yet, butif we combine the prefix "inter" with the verb "to be", we have anew verb, inter-be. Without a cloud, we cannot have paper, so wecan say that the cloud and the sheet of paper inter-are.

If we look into this sheet of paper even more deeply, we cansee the sunshine in it. If the sunshine is not there, the forestcannot grow. In fact nothing can grow. Even we cannot grow withoutsunshine. And so, we know that the sunshine is also in this sheetof paper. The paper and the sunshine inter-are. And if we continueto look we can see the logger who cut the tree and brought it tothe mill to be transformed into paper. And we see the wheat. Weknow that the logger cannot exist without his daily bread, andtherefore the wheat that became his bread is also in this sheetof paper. And the logger's father and mother are in it too. Whenwe look in this way we see that without all of these things, thissheet of paper cannot exist.

この日の夜は里山クラブYOUYOUの佐藤章会長のお宅にて語ったり、歌ったり。ベロニカさんが次の日に小川町を発つということで、お別れ会も兼ねました。ベロニカさんの歌には一同聴きほれました。(ベロニカさんはウイーン青年合唱団のメンバーです。
